Billing of Radiology Services by NPPs on The Rise

A Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute study found that the number of NPPs in radiology who filed Medicare claims increased from 523 in 2017 to 608 in 2019, a relative increase of 16.3%. The survey found that the relative value units of total NPP labor force increased slightly (17.3%) and varied significantly across service categories.

When the researcher evaluated his KKW-submitted claims by clinical category, the study found that 98.7% of KKW services included clinical evaluation and management, invasive image-guided procedures, and image interpretation. It turns out. Among these, invasive interventions accounted for the highest percentage of relative value units across NPP work. Appraisal and management services accounted for the second highest number of relative value units for NPP works, increasing by 40% from 2017 to 2019, from 80 to 111,000. It accounts for an increasing proportion of the NPP workload.

Regarding the potential impact of an observed increase in billings for radiology services by NPPs, Richard Duszak Jr., MD, lead author of the study said: Opinion Observed trends are either good or bad for the specialty or its patients. Such issues require further investigation and analysis. ”

The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology, is based on his CMS database of physicians and clinicians participating in Medicare.
